Earlier this month I survived my first 2 day tour of duty as a Community Engagement Facilitator at Hendon Police College for the Metropolitan Police. I was determined to do my very best for the group of around 20 new recruits and put myself under a lot of pressure in the run up. I realise now that my anxiety was actually a trauma response- a fear of failure, a (mistaken) belief I wasn't good enough, that I was unworthy- an imposter! In preparation, I created a poster which I asked my talented graphic designer daughter Katie to 'pretty up'. It turned out to be the best thing I could have done as it not only helped my team of fantastic, empathetic, humble and intelligent officers to listen to the harrowing narratives from the Lived Experience Presenters with their whole bodies, but it helped me to ground myself too.
I am extremely grateful to those officers for making my first tour such a memorable, fulfilling and positive experience. I really appreciated their engagement and feedback and I am very excited to be repeating this experience in January!
